Enter the Dragon Kingdom: By land from Sikkim / Darjeeling [new!] anytime, 2012

It is a pity that more and more travellers are entering and exiting the fabulous Dragon Kingdom by flights - and in the process missing so much of the wealth the kingdom has to offer - rather than take the time to enter the kingdom the traditional way: by land from its southern borders. A trip that was first pioneered by Bhutan Travel - and now all but forgotten by all - is here once again. Your first night in the Kingdom will be at its southern borders and at its door steps in a region aptly referred to as the "Doars." This is the tropical foothills of the kingdom that stretch all the way from the foothills of western Nepal to the foothills of Sikkim, Bhutan and Arunachal Pradesh in the east. A rich sub-tropical region filled with jungles teeming with the Great Bengal Tigers, wild elephants and the One Horned Rhinoceros among others, it is the region where tea plantations have been carved out from these jungles and where villagers try to learn and share the land with its wildlife.

Starting your journey from here to the heights and depths of the kingdom will pass through beautiful river valleys and adventurous ridges of farmlands, forests, waterfalls and groves of magnolias, rhododendrons and many other fascinating and exotic species of plants, trees and ferns. Travel from the plains, to the foothills and finally to the mountains; from a tropical belt to an alpine region. Have fantastic and vast views of Indian and Bhutanese plains below. The early British explorers and envoys who dared to venture into this fabled land called it Bhootan, land of the Booteas. Their reports rang with strange and marvelous names rendered in imaginative phonetic spellings. Their tales were highlighted with rulers dressed in silken robes living in lofty castles clinging to the sides of mountains. Tales of a thousand rivers plunging through mountain passes and racing across the valleys. Accounts of ingenious bridges made of wood and iron chains straddling these rivers. And stories of roads, not so much as roads (then) as trails, winding around rock face and through dense forests. Forests of giant rhododendrons, wild orchids, exotic birds, unusual animals and above all, they marveled at the inaccessibility of the place.

As you retrace this same overland journey and progress ahead you will realize that times have not changed much since those early reports. Your travel today will transport you to a heroic age of tranquility and enchantment. The day's journey will take you through awesome and fabulous hairpin turns and through lush forests (sometimes spotted with villages) and valleys of the Inner Himalayas. Starting from almost a sea-level then crossing high passes over 10,000 feet and then arrive at the capital valley in the evening at an altitude of 8,000ft. This overland journey is both breathless and breathtaking in scope and range. Truly a wonderful way to enter the Dragon Kingdom. Once here you discover local markets and go across the spectacular Dochu La pass into the balmy Punakha Valley; explore dzongs and roam through historic villages; go on a pilgrimage hike to the Tiger's Nest; pray at the 7th century Kyichu Lhakhang; hike the Che le la ridge overlooking Tibet. Intense explorations, vivid sightseeings, day hikes, and a wealth of visual, natural, and cultural experiences create an exhilarating visit to one of the world's most untouched and fascinating places in truly a fascinating way. A rich and colorful journey through the Land of the Thunder Dragon. The trip can easily be combined with Travel Interlink's discovery tours to Darjeeling & Sikkim for an even more exceptional beauty and powerful mystery !

It is almost the end of winter. But there are still snows in the high mountains and the valleys are still refreshing, visit the kingdom at this time and be among the very few to take part in this rare annual social gathering of the Dragon Kingdom's nomadic highlanders in the fascinating valley of Bumthang. If Bhutan is beautiful, Bumthang is extraordinarily beautiful – if not the most beautiful valley in the Kingdom. Here you will have an unforgettable opportunity to learn and experience how nomads of Bhutan's northwestern and northeastern Himalayan frontiers live; gain insights into how these proud communities which form a rich part of Bhutan's ethnic diversity have survived with their cultures intact to this day; witness the grand pageantry of the Chipdrel -- a ceremonial procession reserved for royalty; see some of the toughest highlanders in the kingdom demonstrate their skills in keyshe -- the traditional Bhutanese wrestling; and participate in friendly contests of archery, khuru (wooden dart throwing), soksum (a light spear or javelin) or dego (similar to horseshoe throwing). Here you will have a chance to sample some nomadic cuisine and if you are truly brave, try the fiery hot national dish of Ema Datshi – and perhaps follow it up with the local beer, the arra. You will also have a rare chance to hike and explore remote 7th century monasteries and ancient temples, circumambulate sacred lakes, and shop for everyday items that the local people use. Witness the vivid pageantry and mystic spirituality of the Serdra festival at Punakha, the ancient capital of Bhutan. The Serdra commemorates a victory over Tibet in the 17th century and is highlighted by the magnificent Golden Procession which re-enacts the battle. Galloping horsemen (descendants of the ancient warrior clans, or prasaps), monks in antique silk robes, dives into the river to retrieve oranges, and a blessing by the Je Khenpo or Chief Abbot in powerful Black Hat dress are all part of this unique festival, where the largest Thongdrel or Great Thangka in Bhutan is displayed. We'll explore the balmy Punakha valley with some easy hikes, and cross the Black Mountains into central Bhutan to see the beautiful dzongs, temples and farms of the lovely, peaceful Bumthang valleys. On the way back we visit the high Gangtey valley, where the rare and magnificent black-necked cranes, the Birds of Heaven, return each year to find refuge until spring comes to the mountains of Tibet. These cranes, the last of the species to be discovered, the least-known and most difficult to see according to Peter Matthiessen, are considered supernatural or "fairy" creatures in Bhutanese and Tibetan folklore. Our trip includes hikes to the Tiger's Nest, temples and a nunnery, the weekend market, an artist's workshop, a get-together with some of the Serdra warriors, and a kaleidoscope of discovery in this remote and ancient land.

Bhutan is a small kingdom wedged between the two most populated countries of China and India. The number of visitors is restricted by a government regulated tour and tariff system. This policy ensures protection of its natural habitats and also that every Bhutanese benefits from the income generated by tourism. Ecologically, Bhutan is a hot spot in the Himalayas. And 65-70% of the land is decreed to be kept under forest cover. Clean air, pristine countryside, exotic flora and fauna, unique architecture, smiling people and preserved social and cultural heritage make this kingdom an exotic and a singular destination. Geographically, Bhutan is an interesting place with the sub-tropics in the south (150m above sea level), to temperate vegetation (2000-3000m) and then to Alpine vegetation (above 3000m). This variation allows many species of fauna and flora to thrive in many different zones. Since hunting is prohibited, the fauna is well protected. Our two weeks itinerary will take you all the way to central Bhutan and through its different zones. Ideal in the months of April (late), May and June, this trip will offer you a chance to see some of the over fifty species of rhododendron and its blooms, several species of magnolias and many varieties of alpine flowers. We will include soft walks over some of Bhutan's high passes of Chelila, Dochhula, Pelila, Yotungla and Trumshing la. On this trip we will take you from 1000 meters to 4000 meters altitude where you will see the dramatic changes in the vegetation and the life it supports - the difference of over 3000 meters is quite dramatic. The journey goes through the farming valley of Paro to the high passes of Dochula (3050m), Pelila pass (3300m) and the Chelela Pass that is close to 4000 meters. Finally, on this trip you will also have an opportunity to see the annual Tsechu (festival) taking place at the remote Domkhar village temple in the Chumey valley of Bumthang. On this very special Spring trip you will explore nature, its wealth of flowers and the kingdom's cultural heritage - surely a unique opportunity of exploring the richness with a minimum of walking on sidewalks away from the main roads.

This is the time when majestic Dzongs peer out of mythical clouds in the most surrealistic ways. Everything is luxuriant, lush and saturated with life. MSNBC says of Bhutan, "It has all the ingredients of a tourist paradise: misty mountains, mysterious monasteries, emerald green paddy fields and tales of yaks and yetis. Yet, each year, barely 7,000 foreign tourists walk through the Buddhist kingdom of Bhutan's spectacular forests covered with conifers, rhododendrons and prayer flags fluttering in the wind." The black-necked cranes which come to Bhutan each year from Tibet and the Qinghai Plateau are renowned in song, poetry and legend for their beauty and mystery. In western Bhutan, the winter in the isolated Phobjika valley near Gangtey - high, remote, beautiful and surrounded by the Black Mountains. The people of the valley, mostly farmers, hold an annual celebration in honor of the cranes at the courtyard of the 16th century Nyingmapa Gompa, with a procession, religious ceremony, folk and masked dances, and archery contests. The black-necked crane is the least known, most difficult to see and last to be discovered of the cranes, the largest flying birds in the world, and according to Peter Matthiessen, “magnificent and stirring creatures, heralds and symbols of all that is being lost.” In Bhutanese and Tibetan folklore they are considered almost supernatural, and it has never been scientifically explained why each and every year, they circle Gangtey monastery three times upon arrival and again when it is time to depart. In Bhutan, mystery is taken for granted.

Geographically, Bhutan is an interesting place with the sub-tropics in the south (150m above sea level) to temperate vegetation (2000-3000m) and then to Alpine vegetation (above 3000m). On this trip we will take you from 1000 meters to 4000 meters altitude where you will see the dramatic changes in the vegetation and the life it supports. The difference of over 3000 meters is quite dramatic! The journey goes through the farming valley of Paro to the high passes of Dochula (3050m), Pelila pass (3300m) and the Chelela Pass that is close to 4000 meters. Here you have an opportunity to explore this richness with short walks and sidewalks away from the roads.

Enter the Dragon Kingdom: By land from Sikkim / Darjeeling [new!]

Be among the very few travellers to discover the Mythic Valley of the Guardian Spirits – a region that is a journey in itself and a wonderful gateway to this mythical and mystic kingdom. Learn and mingle with the nomadic life and share the ancient cultural rhythms of Bhutan with the sanguine Haaps, as the region's people are known. Highlights of your special program will be to sample home-cooked (real home-cooked) delicacies favoured in the region washed down with their fiery brew that the locals love to drink. Take a ride on a yak or a horse; compete in a traditional game of Khuru, Archery and Soksum (Bhutan's answer to the Javelin throw – albeit a light one); enjoy the folk songs and mask dances which underpin the seasonal celebration in this colourful part of the kingdom. Be a part of the weaving and making of Yak Hair Tents from scratch, or learn about the Yak shearing and wool-making, and find out how yak milk is turned into delicious traditional meals by the local villagers. Stay overnight at a traditionally built farmhouses and experience the true essence of a cultural exposure. Hike and explore the Chilela Ridge with its spectacular mountain views; walk among the rhododendron forests. The highlight could be the Nubland Cattle Show at the Alpine Festival. And finally, top off your visit with a hike to the Tiger's Nest and visit the mountain-rimmed capital of Thimphu and the winter Capital, Punakha. This unusual trip in the unusual kingdom will allow you a perfect opportunity to experience life in a traditional Bhutanese village and home in one of the kingdom's smallest and most picturesque districts. Bhutan is one of the last remaining pristine ecosystems left on earth. The producer and director of The Living Edens said, "If there is any country on earth that qualifies as an Eden – not just in part but in its entirety – I believe it is Bhutan." Be among the few to experience a region and sample a lifestyle that has not changed in hundreds of years. A unique and close sensation even by Bhutanese standards. This is summer in Bhutan, sometimes rainy, sometimes balmy and beautiful, and almost empty of tourists – but always enchanting !

Moderate Treks moderate difficulty back2top

Trekking in Bhutan is unique, unlike anywhere else in the Himalayas. More than anywhere else in the Himalayas, a trekking experience in Bhutan offers you an opportunity that is already lost in other regions. More than 65% of the land is protected by law in the kingdom. Moderate treks are generally no more than five nights in duration, and reach a maximum altitude of approximately 12,000 feet, which is just below timberline. Trekking is an wondrous experience anywhere, but in Bhutan it is unequalled, unparalleled and uncomparable. It is still very likely that you will find no other trekkers on your trail. It is a phenomenal and an exhilarating way to see the kingdom: experience its lush terrain and pristine forests, meet with yak herders and spot its unique wildlife such as takins and golden langurs, cross its awesome passes and gaze at its stunning peaks. Trekking in the late April and May offer extra benefits of hundreds of species of exotic flowers in bloom. Trekkers need to be in good physical shape and should enjoy hiking for most of the day and camping at night. The trek portion of the tours is combined with extensive sightseeing and cultural activities.

Spring is glorious in the mountains, when the hills are covered with flowers in bloom, especially Bhutan’s national flower, the glorious Etho Methos – i.e. the rhododendron. A short trek from the beautiful Gangtey valley winds through the Black Mountains which divide western and central Bhutan. The trail goes to the remote Gogona valley, home of yak herders and high altitude farmers, and over the Tashi La pass, through mountains noted for the lush beauty of their forests, where rhododendrons grow to tree size and bloom in a rainbow of colors. The trek stays below 12,000 ft, and is one of the gentlest in Bhutan. Visit the valleys of Paro, Thimphu, Trongsa, Punakha, Wangduephodrang, and Bumthang, with an excursion to Ura, as you explore Bhutan’s countryside, filled with massive Dzongs, red-banded temples, unique architecture and friendly people in traditional dress, in a world of towering mountains and deep forests. Beautiful at any time of year, it is especially so surrounded by the birds, butterflies and flowers of spring. Wildlife Conservation magazine called Bhutan “the most pristine mountain eco-system on the Indian subcontinent.”

High Treks challenging back2top

High treks can be about one week to three weeks in length, and reach altitudes of above 13,000 feet, where the treeline ends. High treks in the kingdom are eminently unique and are unlike anywhere else in the Himalayas. On high treks, you are not only away from all forms of modernity, you are in true wilderness - there are no planes overhead and villages are quite rare. There are no roads and even fewer trails. You are in pure, pristine, wilderness. This is nature in its purest form! The walks are long and arduous but crystal air, lonely paths and views that defy descriptions compliment them. The trails lead you through alpine meadows and rhododendron forests around the foothills of the snow peaked Himalayas, emerald green valleys and crystal clear lakes. Awesome passes crossed can be as high as 15,000-18,000 feet. While no technical climbing skills are required, trekkers need to be in exceptionally good physical condition, and should enjoy strenuous hiking and camping overnights for extended periods. However, the rewards are great: from the most beautiful and remote parts of the kingdom’s spectacular mountain scenery to a wide variety of exotic flora and fauna. All our treks are combined with cultural sightseeing.

You will hike along the winding trails below the majestic giants which form the Inner Himalaya along the Bhutan/Tibet border, crossing several mighty passes, the haunt of rare animals such as the blue sheep, takin and the legendary snow-leopard, exotic birds and flowers like the blue poppy. Once above timberline, walk below the great peaks along sky-high hilltops, green and misted with rainbows, jewel-like mountain lakes, and a botanical garden of wildflowers. This very special Bhutan Travel’s maiden exploration into the newly opened eastern regions of the Kingdom in the isolated areas of Merak & Sakteng offers you an exciting opportunity to blaze trails into an ecological hot spot in the Himalayas. Like elsewhere in Bhutan, the eastern circuit has many wonderful areas. However, due to limited accesses with roads, most travel must be done on foot. Closed until now to protect the unique cultural heritage of the local Brokpa people and to give peace to the “mythical” Yetis, only a handful of researchers were allowed to visit this area with special permissions. Your exploration here will take you into the heart of the nomadic tribal lands of the Brokpas – the highlanders and yak herders - who speak a different dialect and wear completely different outfits from the rest of the Bhutanese. Here you will trailblaze as you trek through forests of exotic rhododendrons and magnolias, camp on alpine meadows used by the yak-herders, or go over the lonely ridges and mountain passes in search of the elusive yetis – as numerous yak-herders have claimed either to have seen the “animal” or to have discovered its tracks crossing the high passes. Renewed interest is due to the fact that British scientists are currently continuing to analyze some hairs found in a den around here some of which had roots attached providing DNA. After some testings, Bryan Sykes, Professor of Human Genetics at the Oxford Institute of Molecular Medicine and one of the world's leading experts on DNA analysis, reports in The Times of London: "We found some DNA in it, but we don't know what it is. It's not a human, not a bear nor anything else we have so far been able to identify. It's a mystery and I never thought this would end in a mystery. We have never encountered DNA that we couldn't recognise before." But to the locals this is not news.... strange snowmen are pictured in old Tibetan and Bhutanese scrolls, manuscripts and murals. Accompanying these drawings are lengthy descriptions of the elusive creature: its habits, appearance, and accounts of its attacks on humans and Yaks.

Everything in the eastern regions of the Kingdom is yet to be visited. It is a world of unexplored regions, fascinating cultural escapades, great scenery and natural mysteries. Be the first to explore its many riches, perhaps even an encounter with the Yeti in this Migoi National Park – which was specifically set up to protect the Migoi (Yetis) – as the Bhutanese refer to them. This is also one of the first community based tourism in Bhutan.
